A second public hearing on a proposed commercial development in west Stettler was held during the first town council meeting of December.
An application is before council to build a commercial strip mall with two restaurants and lease bays, as well as a quick-service restaurant with a separate drive-thru.
The lots at 7002 & 7010 50 Ave, are to the west of the Western Canada Lottery Corporation building.

Council chose to defeat their first zoning bylaw, after a recommendation from administration that council instead rezone the area to a Direct Control Commercial Neighbourhood District.
This change would give council more control over the conditions of the development permit, but required a new public hearing.
As during the first public hearing, some nearby residents attended the meeting voicing concerns about the foot & vehicle traffic that would be brought to the area if this was approved.
There were also worries about the impact on nearby property values, and whether or not Stettler’s population could support more restaurants.
Following the hearing, council debated whether to approve second & third reading to allow for a new development permit to be filed under the new zoning.
Council decided to defer third reading at this time until the December 17 meeting.
