Alberta RCMP Press Release – May 14, 2025 – Edmonton, Alberta

Your Alberta RCMP is reminding all drivers to do their part in keeping emergency and roadside workers safe by slowing down and moving over when approaching stopped vehicles with flashing lights.

Whether it’s a police officer conducting a traffic stop, a paramedic attending to an accident, a firefighter responding to an emergency, or a highway maintenance worker performing roadside repairs, these individuals deserve a safe environment to do their jobs.

The Alberta RCMP advises drivers of the following tips when seeing emergency or maintenance vehicles stopped on the roadside with lights flashing:

  • Reduce your speed to 60 km/h or lower, depending on the posted speed limit.
  • Move over one lane if it is safe to do so, creating more space for those working roadside.
  • Stay alert and be prepared to stop – roadside personnel may be moving around their vehicles.
  • Avoid distractions – keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
  • Do not film or take photos of emergency scenes as you pass by.
  • Use caution in poor weather or low visibility – give even more space if needed.
  • Failing to follow these rules can result in fines and demerits, and can also put lives at risk.

Drivers are also reminded of the proper steps to take when an emergency vehicle with lights and sirens is approaching in traffic:

Signal and safely pull over to the right-hand side of the road, coming to a complete stop. Remain stopped until the emergency vehicle has passed and it is safe to proceed.

Do not block intersections – if already in one, clear it before pulling over. Never try to outrun or follow closely behind an emergency vehicle responding to a call.
