Stettler County council received a report from its protective services manager during its May 14 meeting, highlighting trends in local enforcement activity over the past five years.

Clint Sime presented an overview of the files handled by Protective Services from 2020-2024, noting the department responded to 690 calls in 2023 — a figure that does not include “be on the lookout” (BOLO) requests from other agencies such as the RCMP.

While the overall average number of incident reports has declined in recent years, an increase has been seen in animal control issues and tickets issued for lack of registration or insurance.

Calls involving individuals fleeing from authorities have also risen sharply. Sime reported they used to respond to one or two such cases annually, but now see two or three each month.

Sime added that Protective Services have been collaborating with Alberta Sheriffs to ramp up commercial vehicle inspections on local highways.
