Stettler County council has given second reading to a proposed bylaw that would allow golf carts on designated roads within the municipality.

In September 2024, the Alberta government launched a five-year pilot project under the Traffic Safety Act, granting municipalities the authority to regulate golf cart use on public roadways.

This marks the first type of vehicle to fall under direct municipal jurisdiction. Participating communities are required to determine suitable roadways and maintain a database of registered golf carts.

Council has been reviewing the provincial framework after summer villages around Buffalo Lake expressed interest in participating in the pilot.

The Summer Village of White Sands has offered to administer the permitting system on the County’s behalf. Under the proposed structure, owners would register their golf carts annually for a fee of $80.

Enforcement would fall under the County of Stettler’s Protective Services division.

Fine schedule for offenses involving golf carts

Before returning to council for third and final reading, the bylaw must be approved by the province’s Registrar of Motor Vehicles.
