County of Stettler council has approved the purchase of a new road grader for its operations fleet.
On July 9, council was presented with two options from Finning Canada (Red Deer) for units equipped with snow removal attachments and extended warranty coverage.
The options reviewed were:
- A CAT 140 AWD grader for $625,800 plus GST
- A CAT 150 AWD grader for $680,500 plus GST
The proposal follows discussions at the previous meeting, where the council debated purchasing a used grader.
Council deferred on the matter, instead voting to go with the CAT 140 AWD model for $625,800 plus GST on July 9.
A rural road study was conducted earlier this year, which identified key arterial and resource routes across the County of Stettler.
As a result, council and staff designated two additional graders to focus on maintaining these higher-traffic corridors in the north & south ends of the region.
Although the County currently operates enough graders to meet demand, staff are concerned a mechanical failure could impact road service.
The grader purchase would be a non-budgeted capital item, with funding to be drawn from reserves.
