STETTLER, AB — Breast cancer survivors from the Stettler area showed their strength on July 20 at Buffalo Lake, as part of a weekend of dragon boat training.

The group, Breasties in the Buff, is Alberta’s first rural breast cancer survivor dragon boat team.

Dragon boat racing has become a popular sport and source of support for those who have survived breast cancer. The Stettler-based team was formed after a dragon boat group in Edmonton offered to donate one of their old boats.

According to the International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission, there are more than 260 breast cancer survivor teams worldwide.

The group has been raising funds for new equipment and is planning a beach party on Sept. 6 to celebrate the end of the season. They will continue practicing on the water a few more times before wrapping up for the year.

For more information, the team can be reached at BITBsociety@gmail.com.
