Renovations are moving along on a new fire hall for Stettler County Fire Services at Highway 12 and 38 Street.

Meantime, the County of Stettler has given second & third readings to amendments to its land use bylaw, following a public hearing held during council on Aug. 13.

The amendment adds “emergency service” as a permitted use under highway mixed-use zoning. Emergency services were not previously permitted under that zoning type.

Work began in early July to retrofit the west end of the building which was previously Highway 12 Sales. Storm Mountain Outfitters has also moved from across town to occupy the east side of the building.

The County of Stettler is hoping to open the hall this fall if supplies & equipment arrive on schedule.

The amendment is part of the county’s plan to form its own fire service after council voted on May 21 to leave its fire agreement with the Town of Stettler and create a regional fire commission.

Until further notice, the Stettler Regional Fire Department will continue providing local & area fire protection services.
