Stettler County council has passed third reading of a bylaw that allows golf carts on designated roads.

The decision follows Alberta’s launch of a five-year pilot project in September 2024, which gave municipalities authority to regulate golf cart use on public roads.

Participating municipalities are required to identify suitable routes and keep a database of registered carts.

Residents will need to register annually for a fee of $80, and display a permit on their cart.

The Summer Village of White Sands will administer the permitting system, while enforcement will fall to the County of Stettler’s Protective Services division.

Under the bylaw, golf carts may be operated on specific roads in subdivisions around Buffalo Lake, including:

Scenic Sands: MacDonald Drive, Buffalo Drive, View Place, Poplar Drive, Whitetail Place, and Range Road 21-1A within NW-14-40-21-W4

Buffalo Sands: Buffalo Lane, Aspen Crescent, Sunset Lane, Park Ridge Way

Buffalo Lake Meadows: St. Georges Way, St. Georges Road, Vincent Way, Tim’s Lane, Hill Close

Rochon Sands Estates: Buffalo Way, Pony Drive, Whitetail Close

Rochon Sands Heights: Choke Cherry Lane, Bay View Street, Marina Crescent, Marina Place, Marina View Close, Island View Close, and Range Road 20-4 between Bay View Street and Township Road 40-4

The bylaw prohibits golf carts on sidewalks & pedestrian trails, & excludes rental carts from eligibility.

County council began reviewing the provincial framework after summer villages around Buffalo Lake expressed interest in joining the pilot project.

The bylaw returned to council for final approval on Aug 13 after being reviewed by the province’s registrar of motor vehicles.
