The Town of Stettler will study how it can take part in the 2027 World Juniors after the council agreed to strike a committee to examine potential economic opportunities.

The committee will look at the requirements to host a pre-tournament game ahead of the event in Edmonton & Red Deer from Dec. 26, 2026 to Jan. 5, 2027.

Edmonton last hosted the World Juniors in August 2022 after the event was postponed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The city also staged the 2021 tournament without fans.

Red Deer was a co-host for the cancelled 2022 championship & first hosted the international under-20 tournament in 1995.

For 2027, Rogers Place in Edmonton will host 17 games, including both semifinals & all medal-round matchups.

The remaining 14 games will be played at the Centrium in Red Deer.

Pre-tournament games will be played across Alberta, giving communities a chance to welcome visiting teams before the opening game on Boxing Day.
