The County of Stettler will apply for provincial funding to design a long-term regional framework for fire protection, after moving to establish its own fire department over the summer.
At their Nov. 12 meeting, council backed an application to the Alberta Community Partnership’s Intermunicipal Collaboration Grant.
The study would examine how the newly formed Heartland Regional Fire Commission can deliver fire services across the region, as well as cost-sharing formulas.
The Heartland Regional Fire Commission is made up of the summer villages of Rochon Sands & White Sands, the villages of Big Valley and Donalda, and the County of Stettler.
If approved, the grant could provide up to $200,000. The work is budgeted at $115,000, with administration noting the summer villages will act as managing partners on the project.
The County intends to submit the grant application with a retroactive proposed start date of Jan. 1, 2025.
