Stettler Regional Board of Trade Press Release:
The Stettler Regional Board of Trade is pleased to announce the successful transition of the Big Jack Classic Family Ice Fishing Derby to the newly formed Buffalo Lake Big Jack Classic Association.
Launched in 2023, the Big Jack Classic was created through the Board of Trade’s commitment to fostering tourism, community spirit, and economic growth.
As with past initiatives such as the Stettler Pheasant Festival and the Steel Wheel Stampede, the Board of Trade often incubates major projects until they are ready to be sustained by a dedicated not-for-profit group.
While this process typically takes many years, the remarkable success of the Big Jack Classic has enabled us to hand the event over after only three years, an accomplishment that speaks to the passion and support surrounding this much-loved derby.
The Big Jack Classic has quickly become one of the region’s signature winter events, drawing anglers and families from near and far.
Its reputation as “the best ice fishing derby” many participants have ever attended has helped shine a spotlight on our region, increasing awareness of Stettler and the Buffalo Lake area as a premier four-season destination.
The derby has also brought a welcome boost to local businesses, with weekend visitors filling hotels, restaurants, and shops while creating cherished family memories along the way.
This success would not have been possible without the overwhelming support of the community.
We extend our sincere thanks to all participating anglers, the many dedicated volunteers, the event committee, our generous sponsors, and the continued support from Lisa Roper Outdoors.
Together, you have helped build an event that celebrates our region’s natural beauty, strengthens community bonds, and brings people together for a weekend of fun, connection, and outdoor adventure.
As the Buffalo Lake Big Jack Classic Association takes the lead, proceeds from the derby will now be directed toward enhancements around Buffalo Lake and the surrounding south-shore communities.
Buffalo Lake is a significant draw for locals and tourists alike, and we are excited to see further improvements that will benefit residents, visitors, and the region for years to come.
The Stettler Regional Board of Trade will remain available to offer guidance and support throughout this transition.
We have every confidence that the new committee will continue to grow this exceptional event and uphold the tradition of excellence the Big Jack Classic has become known for.
We look forward to watching the derby thrive under its new leadership and continue creating unforgettable memories on the ice.
Mark your calendars – the 4th Annual Big Jack Classic Family Ice Fishing Derby will be held February 14 & 15, 2026.
