The status of the Village of Donalda was a key item at the County of Stettler council meeting on Nov. 26.
Provincial officials briefed council on the ongoing viability review ordered in July 2025 for the village of about 226 residents northeast of Stettler.
Members of the Alberta Municipal Viability Team joined the meeting by Zoom to outline the process, initiated after Donalda council experienced several losses of quorum.
Quorum refers to the minimum number of councillors required to conduct municipal business.
The provincial team oversees reviews that can lead to municipal restructuring, including amalgamation or dissolution.
Engagement surveys are expected to be mailed to Donalda residents in January to gauge interest in becoming a hamlet within the County of Stettler.
Donalda faced a similar question in 2010, when residents voted 85-29 to remain a village.
Once survey results are compiled, the province is expected to set a date in the new year for a formal vote on Donalda’s future status.
Several smaller communities have dissolved & joined the County in recent years, including Botha in 2017, Gadsby in 2020 & Halkirk in 2025.
