Local police are reminding residents to lock their vehicles after a recent surge in overnight vehicle break-ins.

Members of the Stettler RCMP detachment briefed town council on Jan. 20, noting multiple reports of cars being broken into over the past few weeks.

To underscore the point, officers checked twenty vehicles parked outside the Town office & found five left unlocked during the meeting.

Police said two individuals, believed to be a male and female from out of town, have been seen walking through the Grandview area at night, checking vehicles.

Surveillance footage has been collected, but identification has been difficult as the suspect’s faces were covered.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Cam Russell emphasized the detachment does not monitor Facebook for tips & encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity directly to the station.

He noted submitting video evidence is easier than ever through the RCMP’s email links that officers will send out.

Council was also briefed on the challenges of dealing with repeat offenders, as some minor cases are being dismissed in court.

Aside from the thefts, the RCMP said the town remains generally quiet during the overnight hours.

The detachment is also planning to resume “Coffee With A Cop” sessions this year to give residents a chance to discuss local concerns directly with officers.
