The Stettler RCMP detachment commander provided a snapshot of local policing challenges during a briefing to the County of Stettler council.
Staff Sgt. Cam Russell attended the Jan. 28 council meeting to introduce himself to the four new councillors & to outline current operational pressures within the detachment.
A key concern raised was ongoing staffing shortages, particularly in the traffic unit.
Russell told council that the traffic section is significantly understaffed, requiring relief officers from RCMP K Division to assist.
At the same time, Stettler officers have been supporting the Bashaw detachment, which is also experiencing personnel shortfalls.
Looking ahead, Russell said the detachment is hopeful staffing levels will stabilize in the coming months.
Two cadets & two senior officers are expected to be posted to Stettler, which would reduce reliance on external support.
The RCMP are also exploring budget options to add a fourth office administrator to manage front-desk duties & paperwork.
Currently, one administrative position is federally funded, while the remaining two are funded by the Town of Stettler.
Russell also addressed broader, long-term policing considerations here in Alberta.
With the province’s contract with the RCMP set to expire on Dec. 31, 2032, Russell noted that a potential shift to a provincial police service would carry significant financial implications.
According to Russell, the costs associated with transitioning to a provincial force would be “astronomical” once staffing & logistical requirements are taken into account.
