The Stettler RCMP detachment is slated for an interior facelift starting next month.
Staff Sgt. Cam Russell updated the Stettler County council during their Jan. 28 meeting, noting that renovations are scheduled to begin in March.
The project will be completed in phases over the next year to minimize operational delays.
The scope of work includes the installation of new windows & an HVAC system, as well as fresh paint & flooring throughout the facility.
A key impact of the construction will be the temporary decommissioning of the detachment’s cell block.
While the cells are out of service, police will have to transport prisoners to neighboring detachments such as Blackfalds & Bashaw.
Russell acknowledged that these transports will draw on existing police resources.
While Alberta Sheriffs occasionally assist with prisoner movements, the detachment cannot rely on their availability 24/7.
Council members inquired about the frequency of cell use, learning that the Stettler station handles between 200 & 250 prisoner transports annually.
Many of these individuals are brought in from eastern areas such as Coronation & Consort.
The RCMP does not anticipate any interruptions to front-desk services or the processing of criminal record checks during the renovation period.
When asked about the possibility of a police station expansion in the future, Russell indicated that such a project would require a funding commitment from the Town of Stettler.
