The Town of Stettler & County of Stettler have finalized their transition to two separate fire departments.

A special meeting was held in-camera on Feb. 27 at the Town of Stettler council to authorize the final pieces of the fire transition plan.

The town council approved a motion for the County to sell its share of fire department assets at the hall to the Town for $205,498.42.

Additionally, the town council passed a second motion to purchase the County’s share of building improvements at the Stettler fire station at 4805 47 Avenue for a cost of $577,872.26.

Finally, the town council authorized a motion for the sale of miscellaneous fire department assets to the County of Stettler for $4,474.05.

As both councils held negotiations in-camera, a list of assets was not publicly made available.

The County of Stettler council approved the motions following an in-camera session on Feb. 25.

Fire Station 1 Building & Assets Appraisal

In July 2025, the previous Stettler town council passed a resolution to begin an appraisal of the town fire department building & assets.

A financial review in 2023 found ownership at 74 per cent for the Town & 26 per cent for the County, based on their capital contributions of $1.77 million & $623,000.

County of Stettler Forms Independent Fire Department

The formation of two separate departments came after the County’s withdrawal from the regional agreement in 2025 that the Stettler Regional Fire Department operated under.

The County of Stettler has since formed Heartland Regional Fire, which is in the process of applying to become a commission.

Heartland Regional Fire moved into their Stettler fire hall in mid-October, which is located on the east side of Stettler, at Highway 12 & 38th Street, next to Storm Mountain Outfitters.
