The County of Stettler council moved forward with three planning bylaws at its March 10 meeting, giving first reading to two road closures & repealing an outdated area structure plan.
Gibson Avenue Road Closure
Council gave first reading to a bylaw to close all of Gibson Avenue, an undeveloped road allowance near the Content Bridge at Highway 21.
The land is surrounded by property owned by Salty Cat Inc., which plans to incorporate the closed road into an expansion of its Lazy River RV Resort.
Provincial agencies & utilities, including TELUS and ATCO Electric, reported no concerns.
A public hearing was held on March 10 as part of the bylaw process before the file is sent to the province.
River Creek ASP Repeal Bylaw
First reading of the second bylaw proposes to repeal the River Creek Area Structure Plan.
The plan was originally created in 2010 to guide development of a bareland condominium RV resort along the Red Deer River.
The current landowner, Salty Cat Inc., has indicated it no longer intends to pursue that model.
County staff supported the repeal, noting the document applies only to lands under the same ownership & no longer reflects intended use.
Tail Creek Campground Road Closure
Council also gave first reading to a bylaw targeting the closure of a separate road allowance within the Tail Creek campground area, across Highway 21.
If approved, the land would be transferred to the Métis Nation of Alberta, consolidating campground lands that were originally transferred by the County in 2007, excluding the road allowance at that time.
Next Steps
All three bylaws must receive final approval from Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors for road closures.
The bylaws will return to council for second & third reading following those steps.
