Priority areas for snow removal was a topic of discussion during the first council meeting of October.
The policy identifies the triggers and timeframes for snow & ice removal, as well as for sidewalks & parking lots.
Street Snow Plowing & Removal
After a major snowfall, plows & graders will move snow into windrows. Streets without sidewalks will be windrowed to the side of the road. Streets with sidewalks on both sides will have snow hauled out.
Residential lanes will be plowed once garbage trucks are unable to access them.
Priority 1 – Major Thoroughfares – 5 cm within 24 hours
Priority 2 – Collector Roads & Downtown – 7.5 cm within 48 hours
Priority 3 – School Zone – 7.5 cm within 72 hours
Priority 4 – Residential Collectors – 15 cm within 96 hours
Priority 5 – Residential Roads – 20-30 cm – As required
Ice Control
Intersections, inclines & school zones will be the priority for de-icing using road salt, sand & other chemicals.
If driving conditions become unsafe, all efforts will be made to keep the roads safe to drive on.
Residential lanes will be sanded as required.
Priority 1 – Major Thoroughfares, Hospital, School Zones, Main Street
Priority 2 – Downtown Streets & Lanes, Parking Lots
Priority 3 – Industrial Area, Cemetery Road
Priority 4 – Residential Collectors
Priority 5 – Residential Roads
Sidewalk Snow Removal
Sidewalks & pathways owned by the Town are to be cleared within 48 hours of a snowfall.
Homeowners are responsible for removing snow on sidewalks along their property. However, snow removal from sidewalks onto the streets is not allowed.
Parking Lot & Alley Snow Removal
Paved parking lots at designated locations are to be cleaned after every snowfall. Snow will be stockpiled onsite & removed at a later date.
Gravel parking lots will be done as required, to try to reduce the amount of gravel lost.
