Council met on March 27 to award the 2025 dust control chemical tenders for gravel roads around the County of Stettler.
Following a lengthy discussion over the use of traffic counters to determine the need for dust control, council approved three of the four tenders before them.
The tender for MG-30 (Calcium Chloride/Magnesium Hydroxide) was awarded to Kortech Calcium Services of Edmonton for $0.285 per litre.
The DL-10 (Asphalt Emulsion Dust Suppressant) tender was awarded to Read On Roads of High River for $0.846 per litre
The MC-250 (Medium Curing Asphalt Oil Dust Suppressant) tender will also go to Read on Roads of High River for $1,297 per litre.
Finally for the Calcium Chloride Brine (32%) mix, council chose to defer the tender after staff reported poor effectiveness of the product for dust control over the last two years.
Council also approved a list of 19 sites for the MG-30 to be applied for a cost of $172,368, as their dust control policy aims to cover gravel roads connecting highways, playgrounds & cemeteries. 7 locations across the County of Stettler will also receive a DL-10 application for a cost of $173,006.
The two products are available for county residents to purchase, however staff report the rising cost of MC-250 has put it out of the budget of most ratepayers.
An updated dust control policy is expected to return to the county council in the coming weeks to determine a level of service for hamlets & multi-lot subdivisions.
