Gord Lawlor has been elected mayor of Stettler, defeating Dean Lovell by 100 votes.
Polls closed at 8 p.m. Monday, however results weren’t announced until around 11:30 p.m. after election workers completed a hand count of the ballots.

At the Oct. 9 mayoral forum, both Lawlor & Lovell emphasized the success of the “Stettler Needs Doctors” initiative, which has drawn several new physicians to the community.
Housing shortages were also a dominant issue, with both candidates agreeing that the town must accelerate residential developments.
Lawlor, who’s served two terms on town council, takes over the mayoralty from Sean Nolls who decided not to run for re-election.
The trained goldsmith ran Lawlor’s Jewelry before passing it onto his son, & has been an avid advocate for library funding since being on town council.
Lawlor also drives school bus for Clearview Public Schools, & can often be seen assisting folks in the winter as a snow angel.
The new council will meet for their organizational meeting on October 28.
This was the first time an election has been held for mayor in Stettler since 2010, when Will Brown challenged incumbent mayor Dick Richards.
