County of Stettler council has approved an application for provincial funding to study whether Boehlke’s Pond can be restored as a regional recreation site.

At its Nov. 12 meeting, council voted to support a bid to the 2025-26 Alberta Community Partnership program for up to $200,000.

If approved, the money would fund a full feasibility study of the pond’s infrastructure & assess its potential as a long-term public recreation area.

Administration told council the study would bring in an external consultant to complete a detailed assessment of the site, estimate repair costs & determine whether revitalizing the area is viable.

The County will collaborate with the County of Paintearth, Starland County & Special Areas No. 2 on the application, with the County of Stettler as the managing partner.

In December 2020, Alberta Environment indicated it was willing to discuss repair options & the potential re-establishment of recreational fishing at the pond south of Halkirk.
