The Town of Stettler & County of Stettler have agreed to extend their joint fire services termination agreement for another 60 days.
Both councils passed motions this month citing the need for additional time to complete the valuation & division of shared assets from the Stettler Regional Fire Department.
The original termination agreement approved on Oct. 14, 2025, set out the process for dissolving the regional fire department, & dividing jointly owned equipment & property.
In November, the County of Stettler agreed to sell its share of the Rescue 14 fire engine to the Town of Stettler as part of this process.
The former joint fire-services agreement included a buy-sell mechanism, also known as a shotgun clause, that lets one partner set a price for shared equipment.
The other party must either sell its share at that price, or purchase the offeror’s stake on the same terms.
While progress has been made on the fire transition, officials from both organizations say the work could not be finalized before the existing deadline.
The amendment extends the termination timeline beyond Dec. 31, 2025, until Feb. 28, 2026.
One of the remaining issues in negotiations involves the County of Stettler’s ownership stake in Station 1 of the former regional fire department.Â
A financial review completed in 2023 determined ownership of Station 1 to be 74 per cent for the Town of Stettler & 26 per cent for the County, based on capital contributions of approximately $1.77 million & $623,000.
