Town Updates Internal Policies Covering Staff Appraisals, Hiring, Leave & More

The Town of Stettler is undergoing a modernization of its internal policies, with several updates proposed at the most recent committee of the whole meeting. The policies were then brought forward to the August 5 council meeting for approval. 

Performance Appraisal Policy Amended

The Town’s performance appraisal policy was last amended in 1997, and has been updated to define roles, responsibilities and evaluation criteria.

Hiring Policy Strengthened

Driver’s abstracts will now be mandatory for positions involving Town of Stettler vehicles, and may be rechecked every two years. 

Criminal record checks have also been added, with only job-relevant convictions considered. Vulnerable sector checks are also now required for staff working closely with vulnerable populations.

Educational Assistance Policy Clarified

Council also took a look at how the Town supports after-hour educational programs for their staff. 

Employees must complete coursework on their own time, and are allowed to attend in-class sessions during work hours when necessary.

Code of Ethics Modernized

An online conduct clause has been added to the Town’s employee code of ethics, ensuring staff maintain professionalism on digital platforms. 

Maternity and Parental Leave Updated

Finally, the Town’s maternity & parental leave policy has been revised for clarity and compliance with Alberta labour law & federal Employment Insurance standards.
