Maskwacis RCMP Press Release:
Maskwacis RCMP has received several complaints about drivers not obeying the school bus red alternating lights.
We would like to remind drivers about what school bus lights mean and the laws in place to keep our children safe.
🟡 Alternating amber lights mean the bus is slowing and preparing to stop. Be alert for the lights to turn red, give the school bus space and treat the area with extra care – children might be present waiting for their bus.
🔴 Alternating red lights (and a stop arm, if equipped) mean the bus is stopped and children are getting on or off. Do not proceed until the red lights have stopped flashing and the stop arm is retracted. It is illegal to pass a bus with its red lights flashing.
“We are currently investigating several complaints of motorists failing to stop for a school bus with alternating flashing red lights” said Cst. Catlin Chiasson, Public Information Officer for the Maskwacis RCMP.
“The potential ticket for this is $486.00. Please continue to report these violations to the Maskwacis RCMP. We thank the public for their assistance”.
