The County of Stettler has approved a roadmap for Buffalo Lake’s south shore, but local residents will see a smaller rollout of amenities this summer than originally proposed.
During the April 22 council meeting, officials voted for improvements at three county-owned public access sites: Rochon Sands Heights (formerly Buffalo View Estates), Scenic Sands & Buffalo Lake Meadows.
Dock System Scrapped, Toilets Limited
Council approved an amendment brought forward by Coun. Justin Stevens to reduce the scope of work for the upcoming season. Key changes to the plan include:
Removal of the dock system: A proposed $60,000 removable dock for Rochon Sands Heights has been cut from the plan.
Reduced facilities: Rather than placing portable toilets at all three access points, the county will trial two units at Rochon Sands Heights only for a one-year period.
Signage & Renaming
The county will also proceed with new signage at the lake, as well as animal proof garbage containers.
Council also heard the Buffalo View Estates marina is being renamed to the Rochon Sands Heights Marina.
The 2026 budget had originally allocated $200,000 for these enhancements, including $60,000 for the now-cancelled dock and $31,500 for multi-year portable toilet rentals.
Discussions around the council table centred around low water levels in recent years at Buffalo Lake & efforts to address the issue with the province.
