Some changes to this year’s Canada Day celebrations as the recent rainfall has forced a shuffle of events.

The annual Canada Day Parade is taking a new route through the town this year due to ongoing construction on 50th Avenue.

The parade will start at 10 a.m. at West Stettler Park as usual, heading down 47 Ave and turning on 61 Street.

Once across Highway 12, the route will turn onto 50 A Avenue, and then head down the road towards the high school.

After turning onto 50 Ave, the route will detour onto 54 St to avoid the construction and head down 49th Ave before turning onto Main Street in front of the Hometown Productions & Media office.

The parade will then head down 50 Street and wrap up at the four way stop next to Sobey’s and No Frills.

Meanwhile, Stettler Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) has relocated its annual barbecue from the museum grounds to the Stettler Recreation Centre.

Organizers cited a desire to protect those attending from potential rain and mosquitoes.

The relocated event at the recreation centre will feature a free barbecue lunch and cookies from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by a slate of family activities running until 4 p.m.

Despite the barbecue moving, the Stettler museum will remain open with free admission, mini golf, a scavenger hunt and a paranormal investigation demonstration by the group Spirit, scheduled for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Evening festivities are slated to proceed at West Stettler Park, featuring live music by Super Sonic, concessions and Canada Day swag, culminating in a fireworks display at 11 p.m.

Should the weather not cooperate, evening activities will also be moved indoors to the recreation centre.
