Young baseball players in Stettler beat the summer heat in memorable fashion on Friday, thanks to the local fire department and a major-league presence.
Approximately 86 kids participated in the Blue Jays Academy Community Clinic on July 17, receiving instruction from 10 staff members sent by the Toronto Blue Jays organization.
With temperatures soaring during one of the hottest days of the year, the Town of Stettler Fire Department deployed Fire Engine Tower 10 to spray water overhead.
The BGC Stettler – Heartland Youth Centre says the success of the day relied on local partnerships and volunteers.
The Kinette Club of Stettler and the Stettler Kinsmen Club sponsored a lunch for all of the participants.
Mayor Gord Lawlor and Councilor Sharon Fischer also rolled up their sleeves to serve refreshments to the crowd.
The Knights of Columbus donated the use of two event tents, while Desirae Walstrom-Perry of the For Heaven’s Sake Charity Slo Pitch Tournament supplied picnic tables.
Each participant walked away not only with baseball fundamentals, but also a special necklace to take home as a souvenir.
