A Castor swimmer has capped off an outstanding season by writing his name into the national record books.
David Bursik of the Stettler Tsunami’s Swim Club broke the Canadian Para record in the short-course S-13 50-metre breaststroke at the Alberta Summer Games held July 16 to 19 in Strathcona County.
Bursik touched the wall in 33-point-8-2 seconds. The record-setting swim highlighted a six-gold-medal performance at the meet.
He was not the only area athlete to hit the podium.
Teammate Ryder Martin captured two bronze medals, while Addison Stenberg earned her provincial trials qualifying time.
Bursik’s performance at the Summer Games follows a standout showing at the Canadian Swimming Trials earlier this month.
Competing against the country’s top swimmers, Bursik reached the finals in all five of his events.
He set four new Alberta Para provincial records and recorded a fourth-place finish in the 400-metre freestyle.
