Town of Stettler Councillor Dusty Myshrall announced July 29 that he is seeking the United Conservative Party nomination for Drumheller-Stettler, joining a growing field of candidates vying to succeed outgoing MLA Nate Horner.
Myshrall, previously served six years as president of the Alberta Paramedic Association before entering municipal politics.
“My vision is a Drumheller-Stettler that stays strong not just for the next four years, but for the next four generations,” Myshrall said, noting that his family represents six generations in the Stettler area.
“Having served as a paramedic, President of the Alberta Paramedic Association and now as Town Councillor for Stettler, I know I bring the right experience to the table to effectively address our community’s needs.”
Myshrall’s entry adds a third candidate to the nomination contest alongside Isaac Nibourg and Kevin Van Lagen.
The nomination race has drawn contenders early as candidates work to build support through party membership drives.
Current MLA Nate Horner announced May 20 that he would not seek re-election, though he plans to serve out the remainder of his term until the next provincial election is called.
Under Alberta legislation, Myshrall is not required to take a leave of absence from his council seat while seeking a political party’s nomination.
Provincial rules do require municipal councillors to take unpaid leave if they became registered candidates in a provincial election, allowing Myshrall to continue his duties on Stettler Town Council during the internal party vote.
A date for the Drumheller-Stettler UCP nomination vote has not yet been announced by the party.
