Local high school students took part in hands-on clinical simulations and emergency response training as Stettler Skills Day returned to the Stettler Adult Learning Centre on Oct. 14.
Organized by the Stettler Regional Board of Trade through the Stettler Health Professionals Attraction and Retention (HPA&R) Committee, the event offered 40 area students direct exposure to rural health-care professions.
Participants learned directly from working practitioners across a series of interactive stations.
Demonstrations include administering IV lines, airway management and spinal immobilization.
Volunteers included local healthcare workers and paramedics, along with members of the Town of Stettler Fire Department, who provided students with equipment demonstrations and ladder truck rides.
The initiative looks to introduce youth to rural health-care careers before they commit to post-secondary programs, which can also help address staffing needs in rural medicine by highlighting local career options.
Stettler Skills Day was supported by the Stettler Hospital, the Rural Health Professionals Action Plan (RHPAP), Campus Alberta Central, Town of Stettler Fire Department and the Stettler Adult Learning Centre.
