Unofficial results from Elections Alberta show voters have decisively rejected a push to pursue a separation from Canada.
According to early counts, about 76 percent of voters chose to remain a province, while about 24 per cent supported holding a binding referendum on independence.
As of Tuesday morning, 9,350 votes were cast across Drumheller-Stettler to stay a part of Canada, while 8,732 votes were cast to hold a second referendum.
59 of 71 polling stations were reported on Question 10, or about 83%.
Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement following the preliminary numbers, noting that Albertans chose unity.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also responded to the outcome on social media, thanking voters who cast ballots.
Elections Alberta continues processing remaining counts for the broader set of questions included on the provincial ballot.
