The Stettler Imperials playoff run has concluded.
They were eliminated by a familiar foe, their kryptonite you might say… The Sedgewick Sabres.
After splitting the first two games of the series, the Sedgewick Sabres took game three at home by a 5-2 score. With a 2-1 series lead heading back to Stettler, the Imperials were again facing elimination at the hands of the Sabres.
Stettler was in front of their home crowd for game four on March 8, 2025, but the Sabres also brought their fans to the game, which created a great atmosphere at the Stettler Rec Centre.
In the first period, Carter Ortman of the Sabres got the visitors on the board first. That was his fourth of the playoffs and an early lead for the Sabres, as the goal came two minutes into the first period.
Two minutes into the second, the Sabres found the back of the net again and further quieted the Stettler crowd. That goal came from Dean Brodie. Halfway through the second period, Stettler got on the score sheet. Ethan Rost would direct a pass from Erik Rost past the netminder, Travis Child to make it 2-1.
The Stettler Imperials had their chances in the third period, but couldn’t beat Travis Child. When they finally did, it was too late. Trevor Bromby scored for the Sabres with 6:45 left in the hockey game to give the Sabres some insurance.
Stettler had no choice but to pull their goaltender, which led to an empty net goal by Kyle Sanders. Patrick Fisher would find the back of the net for the Imperials with :45 seconds remaining in the game. It was too little too late. The Sabres had punched their ticket to the championship series against either Provost or Oyen.
