The Town of Stettler is continuing early groundwork to host a pre-tournament game ahead of the 2027 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.
Recreation Manager Brad Robbins has been in contact with Hockey Canada regarding the process to host a pre-tournament matchup in Stettler.
Pre-tournament games are typically held in smaller communities across the host province leading up to the tournament’s opening game on Boxing Day.
The 2027 World Juniors will take place in Edmonton & Red Deer from Dec. 26, 2026, to Jan. 5, 2027.
Rogers Place in Edmonton will host 17 games, while 14 games will be played at the Centrium in Red Deer.
Hockey Canada is expected to release its formal request for proposals after the 2026 Winter Olympics in February.
The update follows a council decision in November to strike a committee tasked with examining what would be required for Stettler to participate in the World Juniors.
Once the request for proposal is issued, communities will be able to review hosting requirements & submit bids.
Further discussion at council is expected once Hockey Canada releases its hosting criteria.
Alberta last hosted the World Juniors in August 2022, after the original tournament was cancelled midway due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
