Town of Stettler Press Release:

Council Takes Development Forward Approach with Land Use Bylaw Amendments to Support Data Centre Opportunities in the Future

January 22, 2026 – The Town of Stettler continues to position itself as a community ready for future growth and innovation.

In an effort to prepare for the emerging opportunities associated with data centre development, and to align with the Province of Alberta’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Centers Strategy, Town of Stettler Council has approved amendments to the Land Use Bylaw at their meeting on January 20, 2026 to allow data centre developments within the town’s industrial areas.

These amendments reflect Council’s commitment to being proactive and development-focused, ensuring that Stettler is well positioned to respond to new economic opportunities as industries evolve and technology continues to advance.

Council members have expressed enthusiasm about the potential benefits that a future data centre development could bring to the community.

These benefits may include community growth, economic diversity, increased municipal tax revenue, as well as both temporary and longer-term employment opportunities during the construction and development phases of a facility.

“Council is committed to exploring a variety of economic development avenues that support long-term sustainability and growth for Stettler,” said Gord Lawlor, Mayor of the Town of Stettler.

“This amendment sends a clear message that Stettler is prepared to work alongside the province and industry as new economic opportunities emerge and keeps our community well positioned to attract investments that benefits residents and strengthens our local economy.”

The Town of Stettler will continue to work collaboratively with provincial partners, industry stakeholders, and the development community as it explores opportunities that align with Council’s strategic priorities and the community’s long-term vision.

Council looks forward to the possibilities ahead and remains committed to responsible, forward-thinking economic development that benefits residents, businesses, and the broader region.
