A proposed $10,000 purchase tied to the Stettler & District History Book sparked extended debate at the Feb. 11 meeting of the County of Stettler council.
The informal request for additional support was raised during the meeting about possible ways the County could help boost sales.
Councillors discussed whether to buy 25 multi-volume sets for potential resale, but ultimately voted down the motion.
Questions were raised over whether the County would be able to recover costs if sets remained unsold & who would bear responsibility for a loan arrangement with a volunteer organization.
The project has been nearly a decade in the making, with between 40 to 50 volunteers compiling more than 1,200 local family histories & highlights from over 1,000 area businesses.
The County previously provided $5,000 to the committee in 2021. That same year, the Town contributed $16,450 towards the initiative.
The project was formally celebrated during a Jan. 17 launch event at the Stettler Public Library.
At the event, committee member Stan Eichhorn said organizers were aiming for an initial print run of 200 sets at a time.
“We’ve asked the bookbinder to do 200 sets at a time so that we can start offering the books as soon as he’s done, then the next 200, and carry on that way,” said Eichhorn.
“We’ve asked for $200 as a pre-order amount, & have said the set of books will not exceed $400.”
Pre-order details & project information are available online through the committee’s website at stettleranddistricthistorybook.com
