Erskine residents will see fresh road surface work on 5th Street this year after the County of Stettler council moved to reallocate provincial grant funding.

At its Feb. 11 meeting, council authorized the work for an estimated $173,500, excluding GST, with funding to come from the 2025 LGFF capital grant.* (Local Government Fiscal Framework grant)

County staff had previously bundled three pavement & asphalt projects under their provincial  grant submission, which were approved by council in September 2025.

While two projects were approved by the Government of Alberta, a proposed asphalt pad for the County’s new fire hall was not.

In order to meet the grant conditions, county administration identified the Erskine project as a replacement, which will see a heavy application of MC-250 poured on 5th Street to create a pavement-like surface.

During the discussion, Coun. Justin Stevens raised concerns about paving areas with undeveloped lots, noting past instances where new surfaces were damaged by moving houses, concrete work & truck traffic.

Council passed a second motion to bring back options to protect their road infrastructure such as road bans, & to notify the adjacent agriculture landowner about the project.

The 5th Street project joins two other previously approved asphalt upgrades under the 2025 LGFF Capital Grant:

Approximately 210 square metres of six-inch hot mix asphalt will be laid at the approach access to Inter Pipeline, as well as full road reconstruction & repaving of 165 metres of 2nd Street in Gadsby.

The estimated total cost for the three projects is $431,400, to be covered by the LGFF Capital Fund.
