The Rural Health Professions Action Plan (RHPAP) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2026 Rhapsody Awards, which honour individuals and teams who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to rural healthcare in Alberta.

These awards celebrate the vital contributions of healthcare professionals and community members working to strengthen care in rural communities across the province.

Rhapsody Healthcare Heroes Award: Stettler District Ambulance Association

The 2026 Rhapsody Healthcare Heroes Award has been awarded to the Stettler District Ambulance Association (SDAA), recognizing the team’s exceptional commitment to emergency medical services in rural central Alberta.

Serving a catchment area of more than 38,000 people, the 35-member team is being honoured for its professionalism, compassion, and resilience while navigating the ongoing challenges facing rural healthcare.

The association has also been recognized for mentoring future healthcare professionals and ensuring continuity of care during physician shortages and emergency room closures in the region.

Rhapsody Physician Award: Dr. Wesley Steed

Dr. Wesley Steed has been awarded the 2026 Rhapsody Physician Award for his more than 32 years of dedicated service to the community of Taber and surrounding region.

Known for his quiet leadership, steady presence, and commitment to patient care, Dr. Steed is highly respected by colleagues, students, and patients alike.

Beyond his medical practice, he volunteers locally with organizations including the Taber Food Bank and has participated in humanitarian medical trips to Fiji, Guatemala, and Kenya.

Community Celebrations

Both Dr. Wesley Steed and the Stettler District Ambulance Association will be celebrated in their respective communities in the coming weeks.

Each celebration will feature an award presentation, a video profile highlighting their contributions, and a $1,250 donation made on their behalf to a local organization of their choice.

These events aim to honour their exceptional service and inspire others in rural Alberta to continue their dedication to healthcare excellence.
