The County of Stettler council is stepping up to support the 32nd annual Byemoor Bullarama.
During its Apr. 8 meeting, council voted to provide $1,500 to the Sullivan Lake West Agricultural Society to assist with holding the event this weekend.
While the event typically draws between 500 and 600 spectators, council heard corporate sponsorship has dipped compared to previous years.Â
The event is also grappling with rising insurance premiums & operational costs.
The county has historically assisted the Byemoor arena with concrete & ice plant work, as well as a $12,000 grant to replace their hot water tank.
In addition to the one-time funding, council directed the organizers to consult with the County Recreation Board regarding long-term financial assistance.
The Byemoor Bullarama features an international field of riders from Canada, Brazil, New Zealand & the United States.Â
The competition includes a 25-contestant long round & an eight-rider short round, with cowboys competing for a $3,000 added purse.
The April 17 event in Byemoor is priced at $20 per person, with a dance following the bull riding for an additional $15.
