Introducing Students to Careers in Rural Health Care
Local and area high school students interested in health care career opportunities are invited to take part in the 2026 Stettler Skills Day on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
Brought to you by the Stettler Regional Board of Trade, a Stettler Health Professionals Attraction & Retention (HPA&R) Committee initiative, Skills Day gives local students a hands-on opportunity to explore a wide range of careers in rural health care while connecting directly with local professionals working in the field.
Students are encouraged to register early, only 40 spaces are available for this interesting and informative day.
The event is designed to help students learn more about career options available in healthcare and better understand the education, training and skills required to pursue them.
Throughout the day, students will have the opportunity to hear from local health-care professionals, ask questions about their careers and participate in hands-on, interactive learning stations.
Previous Skills Day activities have included suturing, injections, IV starts, laboratory studies, casting, airway management, spinal immobilization and ambulance and emergency response demonstrations.
Our local nurses, physicians, laboratory and diagnostic imaging professionals, paramedics, firefighters and other health-care workers play an important role in making this event possible, by volunteering their time and sharing their experiences and skills with students.
The Stettler Hospital is a generous sponsor and contributor, as well the Rural Health Professionals Action Plan (RHPAP), Campus Alberta Central (CAC) and Stettler Adult Learning Centre (SALC) all play supportive and important roles in this community initiative.
One of the goals of Skills Day is to introduce young people to the many career opportunities available within rural health care before they make decisions about post-secondary education and future career paths.
Skills Day provides students with a unique opportunity to ask practical questions such as what it is like to work as a nurse, doctor, paramedic or other health-care professional, what education is required and what a typical day on the job may look like.
The event can also help students make valuable connections with local professionals and learn more about potential job-shadowing and career exploration opportunities.
The Stettler Regional Board of Trade encourages students who are considering a career in health care, as well as those who are simply curious about the options available to them, to register early for this event.
