A wind storm on October 17 peeled the roof membrane off of a local apartment in Stettler.

High winds tore the roof off an apartment building in Stettler, part of a destructive wind storm that swept across east-central Alberta on Saturday.

The severe gusts peeled a section of the roofing membrane from Midtown Estates at 5717 45 Ave., sending heavy material crashing down into the adjacent fence and carport.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported. The top-floor suite on the affected side of the building was unoccupied, having been vacant since the end of August.

Broken tree branches, knocked-over commercial signs, and loose debris littered streets and yards, with anything susceptible to wind uplift posing a hazard.

The local storm damage occurred around the same time as a major military disaster at CFB Wainwright, located about 200 kms northeast of Stettler.
