County of Stettler council debated options for the future of one of their pieces of road equipment during their July 23 meeting.

A C-115 CAT motor grader has been removed from service after fluid sample testing and an oil filter inspection revealed visible engine debris.

County operations staff flagged the issue early and requested a full inspection by equipment dealer CAT Finning of Red Deer. Council looked at four options, ranging from a complete rebuild to deferring repairs entirely.

A motion was made to proceed with a full rebuild of the grader, including engine replacement and refurbishment for just over $570,000. The work would be completed by Finning, with a five-year or 6,000-hour warranty.

Operations staff noted the repair is not currently in the County’s 2025 capital plan. The CAT 140 AWD model grader purchased by the County on July 9 is due to arrive within a few weeks, allowing this grader to be taken out of service.
