Stettler Town Council has passed first reading of an updated intermunicipal development plan, a long-term framework that guides how the Town and County of Stettler will coordinate land-use development over the next 50 years.
The updated plan, presented during council’s Aug. 5 meeting, outlines future growth areas & environmental preservation areas across lands in & around the town boundary.
The document has been in development since 2020, but was paused in March 2024 while the two municipalities finalized updated water & wastewater agreements.

Cold Lake, Red Willow Creek, West Stettler Pond & Shuckburgh’s Slough are among the natural features identified in the plan.
Red Willow Creek & Shuckburgh’s Slough drainage channel are designated as critical components of the regional drainage system. Under the plan, development that could impact water quality or quantity in these areas would not be supported.
The IDP also addresses future annexation processes & population density targets for both the Town & County of Stettler, among other matters.
The Alberta government has given the municipalities until Dec. 31, 2025, to adopt a finalized IDP to help manage anticipated growth.
Stettler County council will hold first reading of the plan on Aug. 13. A joint meeting between the two councils is set for Sept. 15, after which public hearings will be held before final readings are considered.
