Provincial grant money is helping the County of Stettler expand its traffic enforcement fleet.
At its July 8 meeting, the county council formally approved the purchase of a second solar-powered radar and messaging trailer.
The approximately $28,221 piece of used equipment will be used to monitor traffic speeds in problem areas across the county.
The purchase is funded in part by a $13,514 provincial grant awarded by Alberta Transportation this spring.
The county council authorized a transfer from general operating reserves to cover the remaining balance on the unbudgeted expense.
County staff took delivery of the trailer on July 2, going with an identical model to the county’s existing trailer.
Both units feed real-time traffic data into a shared cloud portal.
The solar-powered units use red and blue strobing lights to deter speeders, and bi-directional radar capable of tracking vehicles from over 2,000 feet away.
It’s also equipped with an internal camera system that can text alerts to officers in cases of extreme speeding, low battery levels, or equipment tampering.
Administration noted the trailer will double as a mobile billboard to broadcast roadside safety warnings or promote upcoming county events.
