The Town of Stettler has taken its first step toward allowing an indoor storage facility in its downtown commercial district.
During its July 21 meeting, the town council was presented with options to address an application for an indoor storage facility at 4814A – 50 Street, next to the Coffee Tree cafe.
Option 1 proposed an amendment making “Storage – Indoor” a blanket discretionary use across the downtown C1 Commercial Central District.
Instead the council opted for option 2, approving a framework of development controls that would come to the Municipal Planning Commission.
These would include conditions around not allowing storage loading and unloading from the front of the building, and possible additional conditions.
Coun. Sharon Fischer voiced opposition during the discussion, stating she does not want to see downtown lots converted into indoor storage units.
The bylaw amendment will now be advertised to the public and is scheduled to return to council for a public hearing on August 18.
If the amendment passes, the proposal would head to the MPC for a development permit application where the additional conditions would be considered.
