A central Alberta volunteer fire department is mourning the loss of one of its members and his young son following a two-vehicle collision on Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency crews from Camrose and Wetaskiwin responded to a crash at Highway 21 and Township Road 481 near Armena around 4:37 p.m. on September 15.
Police say a motorcycle collided with a pickup truck hauling a utility trailer.
The 35 year old male driver of the motorcycle, identified by colleagues as Bashaw volunteer firefighter Dayce Newman, and his 13 year old male passenger were declared dead at the scene.
A 78-year-old man and 76-year-old woman in the pickup truck were uninjured.
The Bashaw Volunteer Fire Department expressed its grief on Wednesday, extending condolences to the Newman family for the loss of their teammate and his son.
Tributes quickly poured in from across the region’s emergency services network, with Heartland Regional Fire in Stettler sending their thoughts to the family and community.
Mayor Cindy Oram also offered condolences on social media on behalf of the Town of Bashaw.
